-Was the first human to travel faster than the speed of sound. After enlisting in the army, Yeager was assigned to the Army Air Corps.

-He was commissioned an air-force fighter pilot, stationed in England.

-He began to fly the experimental X-1,in which, on October 14, at an altitude of 120,000 m (40,000 ft), he broke the sound barrier (1,066 km/h; 662 mph).

-He set another world speed record 2,660 km/h (1,650 mph) in an X-1A rocket plane.
