Wang, Vera Ellen
1949 - Born on June 27th in New York City, New York. Chinese-American fashion designer residing at New York.
1968-1969 - A talented figure skater, Wang competed professionally throughout her teens. She placed fifth in the junior pairs competition in the U.S. National Championships with her partner, James Stuart.
1971 - Upon her graduation from college, Wang shelved her skating career and began working for Vogue magazine.
1972 - At the age of 23, Wang was promoted to senior fashion editor—a title she would hold for the next 15 years.
1987 - She left Vogue to take a job as design director for accessories at Ralph Lauren.
1989 - Married to Arthur Becker on June 22nd. Frustrated with the slim selection of existing bridal wear, she sketched her own design and commissioned a dressmaker to tailor the elaborate gown at a cost of $10,000. They had two daughters.
1994 - Wang first received international attention during the Olympics when she designed a hand-beaded ensemble for figure skater Nancy Kerrigan.
- Wang has been honored with a number of awards for her achievements, including the Girl Scout Council’s Woman of Distinction Award.
- She was elected as a member of the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America.
1993 - Wang has been honored as the Chinese American Planning Council’s Honoree of the Year Award
2001 - Wang launched her first fragrance and published a highly anticipated wedding guide.
