1090 - Theobald, Archbishop of Canterbury, born near Bec, NW France. He was of Norman parentage.
1137 - A monk at Bec, he became abbot there.
1138 - 1161 - He was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. He crowned King Stephen, but after the king's death he refused to regard Stephen's son as his successor, and eventually crowned Henry II.
1155 - He advanced his archdeacon, Thomas Becket, to the chancellorship, introduced the study of civil law into England, and resisted all attempts by the monasteries to throw off episcopal jurisdiction.
1161 - Died on the 18th of April in France.
