1884 – She was born on the 8th day of August this year in St. Louis, Missouri.

 

1898 - She attended Mary Institute, and the following year she enrolled in Hosmer Hall.

 

1903 - She graduated in Hosmer Hall this year.

 

1905 - Her influences included the actress Duse, whom she never saw perform, the British poet Christina Rossetti, and numerous trips to Europe, beginning this year.

 

1913 – She was courted by two ardent admirers. The poet Vachel Lindsay fell in love with her and at one point send her long, fantastic love letters on a daily basis expressing his true love.

 

1914 - She married Ernst Filsinger, a wealthy businessman, when she was thirty years old.

 

1915 - Her style and lyricism are well illustrated in her poem, "Spring Night”, from that collection.

 

1918 - She won the Columbia University Poetry Society prize (the forerunner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry) and the annual prize of the Poetry Society of America for her volume, Love Songs.

 

1929 – She divorced Filsinger this year.

 

1931 - Her friend and former suitor Vachel Lindsay had also committed suicide.

 

1933 – She died of overdosed with sleeping pills on the 29th day of January this year.

 

1994 – She was inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
