1505 – An English composer was born this year in England.

 

1532 - His first known appointment to a musical position was as organist of Dover Priory, a Benedictine priory at Dover (now Dover College).

 

1538 – His career fortunately took him to London.

 

1543 – He was composing and performing for Henry VIII until the king's death.

 

1547 – He was one of the first church musicians to write anthems set to English words, although Latin continued to be used also, during the inauguration of reformed Anglican liturgy.

 

1558 – He also worked for Queen Elizabeth I until the time of his death.

 

1585 – He died peacefully in his house in Greenwich in November of this year, and was buried in the chancel of the parish of St Alfege's Church.
