1752 - Born Carlisle on the 27th of July.

 

1760 - He grew up in Baltimore, to which his family had moved.

 

1777 - He helped prevent General William Howe's fleet from coming to the aid of General John Burgoyne, contributing to the crucial American victory at Saratoga.

 

1793-1803 - He won election four times to the U.S. House of Representatives

 

1803-1815 - He held a seat in the Senate.

 

1814 - Led about 13,000 troops in defending Baltimore.

 

1816 - Returned to the House of Representatives. 1822 - He stayed until once again moving over to the Senate.

 

1833 - He held his Senate seat until, marking 40 continuous years in Congress.

 

1835 - He took command of the state militia and put down riots in Baltimore.

 

1839 - The grateful city elected Smith as mayor.

 

1839 - Died in Baltimore on the 22th of April.
