1759 - Born on the 29th of November in Peterborough, New Hampshire.
1777 - Smith entered Harvard College, but left to fight with General Stark's troops at the Battle of Bennington.
1787 - He served Peterborough as town clerk and selectman, and he was elected a State Representative.
1789 - Smith served on a committee to revise the laws of New Hampshire.
1791 - He was a delegate to the New Hampshire Constitutional Convention, which framed laws which were followed for the next fifty years.
- Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in the elections and took his seat at Washington in March.
1797 - He served when he was named Judge of Probate for Rockingham County.
1800 - He was appointed U.S. District Attorney for New Hampshire.
1802-1809 - Smith served as Chief Justice then resigned to serve a one-year term as governor of the state.
1813 - He was again named Chief Justice of the state's highest court.
1816 - He served, then returned to legal practice again.
1820 - He retired to become president of a bank and treasurer of the Academy at Exeter.
1842 - Died on the 21st of September in Dover, New Hampshire, and is buried at the Winter Street Cemetery in Exeter, New Hampshire.
