1940-1941 - he joined CBS in Berlin during World War 2

1942- Married- Benedicte Traberg- one son, one daughter)

1957- returning as Washington correspondent and later bureau chief.

1960-  He moderated the first Kennedy-Nixon debate

1960-62 - Face the Nation Host

1962 - joined ABC network

1969-75- co-presented ABC Evening News

1975-79 - Becoming increasingly conservative politically, he later worked as a commentator (1975-9).
