1980 - Served as the governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

 

1991-1996 - Indian finance minister.


         - He has been a member of the Rajya Sabha for Assam.

         - Was elevated to finance minister in by Prime Minister Narasimha Rao.
 

1999 - He did not join the rebels in a major split which occurred, when three Congress leaders objected to Sonia Gandhi's rise as Congress President and Leader of the Opposition.

         - Lost his seat in the Lok Sabha from South Delhi.

2002 - He was awarded the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award.

 

2004 - Prime minister of India.

 

2005 - Indian foreign minister.

 

2006 - He made it clear in his address to Parliament regarding his Nuclear Deal with US.
