1774 - Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton born on the 28th of August in New York City. She helped with the formation of the Society for the Relief of Poor Widows with Small Children, NYC's first private charity organization.

1794 - Married at the age of twenty and became an active philanthropist.

1797 - She was one of the founders of a society designed to help poor widows with small children.

1800 - She horrified her Protestant relatives by becoming a Catholic. But the rector of St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, asked her to start a school there. This marked the beginning of the Catholic system of parochial schools in America.

1809 - She invited four friends to found a new religious community, the Sisters of St. Joseph. They opened a school for the poor close by Emmitsburg in Maryland.

1812 - The small community had grown to nineteen and was accepted as an official order, with her as its first superior.


1813 - She took her vows as a nun.

1821 - Died on the 4th of January.

1963 - She was beatified by Pope John XXIII on the 17th of  March.

1975 - Canonized by Pope Paul VI on the 14th of September. She is the first United States citizen to be canonized.
