1932 – He was born on the 6th day of June this year on Randolph Air Force Base, after which he was named near San Antonio, Texas.

 

1962 – He was educated at Texas Military Institute and West Point. He received both an S.M. degree in Aeronautics/Astronautics and the degree of Engineer in Aeronautics/Astronautics (the E.A.A. degree) from MIT in this year.

 

1963 – He was one of the third groups of astronauts named by NASA in October of this year, and as commander of the Apollo 15 mission is one of only twelve men who have walked on the moon.

 

1966 – He and command pilot Neil Armstrong were launched into space on the Gemini 8 mission, a flight originally scheduled to last three days but terminated early due to a malfunctioning thruster.

 

1969 – He served as command module pilot for Apollo 9, in this year. This was the third manned flight in the Apollo series.

 

1971 – He made his third space flight as spacecraft commander of Apollo 15. He has a B.S. from the United States Military Academy and an S.M. from MIT. He has been awarded two NASA Distinguished Service Medals.
