1745 - Born on March 29th in Guildford, Surrey. John Russell was a divided artist. The finest British pastel artist of his time, he was mainly a portraitist.
1767 - Set up his own studio and traveled around Britain.
1770 - Studied at the Royal Academy, a school of art. He won a gold medal for figure drawing.
1772 - Published his Elements of Painting with Crayons.
1789 - He made the portrait of Francis Willis, a royal physician.
1790 - He was the Crayon Painter to King George III, Queen Charlotte, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York.
1806 - Died on April 20th in Hull from typhus.
