Rove, Karl Christian
1950 - Born on December 25th in Denver, Colorado. American political consultant, the principal political strategist and a leading policy adviser in the administration of President George W. Bush.
1973 - He ran for national chairmanship of the College Republicans.
- He was special assistant to Republican National Committee Chairman George H.W. Bush.
1976 - Married to Valerie Wainright on July 10th.
1977 - Served as executive director of the Fund for Limited Government.
1981 - He was president of Rove & Company, an Austin-based public affairs firm that worked for candidates, nonpartisan causes and nonprofit groups.
- He was deputy chief of staff to Texas Governor William Clements.
1986 - Married to Darby Hickson on January 25th.
1994-1998 - He masterminded the younger George Bush's upset victory in the governor's race and directed his landslide re-election effort.
2000 - In the presidential campaign, he helped orchestrate Bush's enormously successful fund-raising operation, and after Bush lost badly to John McCain in the New Hampshire primary, used hardball tactics to beat McCain in South Carolina.
2001 - When George W. Bush entered the White House, Rove became senior adviser to the president, a position from which he exercised considerable power.
2002-2004 - He was the architect of successful Republican efforts to retain control of the U.S. House and reclaim the Senate, and retain control of the White House and both houses of Congress.
2005 - He became an assistant to the president and deputy chief of staff with expanded responsibilities for domestic policy.
2006 - Rove's reputation was tarnished by revelations of repeated contacts between his office and lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who pleaded guilty in January to charges involving fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to bribe public officials.
- Rove was under suspicion in a scandal that involved the leaking of the identity of CIA officer Valerie Plame. Though he was not charged with any crimes, Rove gave up his domestic policy role in the administration in April.
- Rove was removed from day-to-day policymaking responsibilities in order to work full-time on midterm election strategy.
