1789-1790 - A delegate to the State constitutional convention.
1794-1803 - He was elected as a Pro-Administration (later Federalist) to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the Senate declaring the election of Albert Gallatin void.
- Was reelected and served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Fifth Congress.
- He moved to Pittsburgh.
- An unsuccessful candidate for governor of Pennsylvania and resumed the practice of law.
1847 - He died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 27th; interment in Allegheny Cemetery.
