Rodrigues, Amália da Piedade Rebordão
1920 - Born on July 1st in Lisbon. Amalia Rodrigues, the singer-songwriter who powerfully personified her country's brooding Fado (fate, or destiny) music.
1939 - She began to perform in clubs along the waterfront, her career took off, paving the way for appearences in theatre productions, movies and world-wide concert tours.
1974 - A coup brought down a half-century of rightist dictatorship, and Amalia was accused of collaborating with the deposed fascist regime.
1999 - Died on October 6th at her home in Lisbon, Portugal.
