1970 - 1972 - Served as a Professor in Psychology, in New York University.

1979 - Named as a full professor of psychology.

1983 - 1993 - She chaired an international research network studying health and behavior for the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

1985 - Added the title of professor of medicine and psychiatry.

1992 - She served two years as chair of the department of psychology and one year as dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

1994 - Became the first woman to be named to the presidency of an Ivy League institution.

1994 - 1995 - Served as a Presidential panel to review security at the White House.

2003 - Was presented with the Philadelphia Award, recognizing "citizen[s] of the region who [have] done the most to advance the best and largest interest of the community".

2005 - Became president of the Rockefeller Foundation in March.

2006 - She is currently on the the Board of Directors of Citigroup, AMR Corporation (the parent company of American Airlines), and Comcast Corporation where she served as the presiding director.
