1902 - Born in Liège on the 15th of July.

1926 - He studied law at the University of Liège, where he obtained a PhD.

1935 - He joined the Liberal party and was elected city councillor of Liège.

1939 - He won a seat in the Chamber of Representatives.

1940 - Mobilized as reserve officer, he was captured by the Germans and spent the rest of the war in captivity.

1947 - He promoted a bill on the organization of a federal state.

1949-1950 - Rey was Minister of Reconstruction.

1954 - Minister of Economy.

1958 - Member of the Commission of the CEE, responsible for external relations.

1964 - He played an important role in the negotiations of the Kennedy Round.

1967 - He succeeded Walter Hallstein as President of the European Commission.

1968 - He oversaw the completion of the customs union.

1969 - He also played an important role the Summit of The Hague.

         - Rey was chairman of the board of the College of Europe in Brugge.

1974 - He presided the over European Movement and was member of the Jean Monnet Foundation for Europe.

1979 - He became member of the first European Parliament elected by universal suffrage.

1983 - Died on the 19th of May in his native city Liège.
