1920 - Beryl Reid, born on the 17th of June in Hereford, Herefordshire, WC England, UK. A commediane and an actress.

1936 - She made her first stage appearance at a concert party.

       - She left home at the age of 16 to go and work in a shop, where she lasted six weeks.

1952 - 1956 - The radio series Educating Archie,  established her in the comic character of schoolgirl Monica, and her other creations include the Midlands teddy-girl Marlene.

1965 - The Killing of Sister George, brought her recognition as a serious actress.

1968 - She won a Tony award for its Broadway production of The Killing of Sister George, repeating her role on film.

       - In demand for eccentric character roles, her films include Star!.

1969 - Starred in the film Entertaining Mr Sloane.

1982 - She received a British Academy Award for her role in the television series Smiley's People.

1984 - Her autobiography, So Much Love, appeared.

1996 - She died following knee surgery, aged 76, on the 13th of October.
