1879 - His albums of lithographs, such as Dans le rêve (In the Dream) and La nuit (Night), show a dramatic range from deep blacks to vivid whites.
1884 - Rose to prominence as a result of praise of his art by Joris-Karl Huysmans in his classic decadent text À Rebours (trans. Against Nature); his lithographs also accompanied translations of Edgar Allan Poe, and most notably an edition of Gustave Flaubert's La Tentation de Saint Antoine.
1890 - He turned to oils and pastels.
1903 - Received the French Legion of Honor.
- His brilliantly colored flowers, landscapes, and literary subjects have a romantic, dreamlike quality, as, for example, Vase of Flowers (Museum of Modern Art, New York City) and Orpheus (Cleveland Museum of Art).
1916 - Died on July 6th in Paris, France.
