1826 - Born on October 8th in Warren County, North Carolina. Senator from North Carolina.

1847 - Graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

1852 - Was a presidential elector on the Whig ticket.

         - Became the attorney general of North Carolina.

1861 - Was a peace commissioner to the Provisional Congress at Montgomery, Alabama.

1862 - He was chosen colonel of the 35th North Carolina infantry, participated with his regiment in all the important battles of the Army of Northern Virginia, was severely wounded in the seven days' fight around Richmond.

1863-1865 - Was promoted brigadier-general and major-general, but the fall of the Confederacy prevented the receipt of the latter commission.

1872 - Elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy.

         - Served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Fifty-third Congress; chairman, Committee on Commerce (Forty-sixth and Fifty-third Congresses), Committee on Railroads (Forty-sixth Congress), Committee on Private Land Claims (Forty-ninth through Fifty-second Congresses).

1895 - He was the United States Minister to Mexico.

1904 - He died on October 8th in Garysburg, Northampton County, North Carolina.
