1882 - John Rabe, born on the 23rd of November in Hamburg, Germany. He was a German businessman whose Nanjing Safety Zone sheltered some 200,000 Chinese from slaughter during the Nanjing Massacre.
1910 - 1938 - He worked for the Siemens AG China Corporation in Shenyang, Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and later Nanjing.
1937 - In November, as the Imperial Japanese Army advanced on Nanjing, he, along with other foreign nationals, organized the International Committee and drew up Nanjing Safety Zone to provide Chinese refugees with food and shelter upon the impending Japanese slaughter.
1938 - He left Nanjing, traveling to Shanghai and then back to Germany.
1945 - He worked in the Berlin headquarters of the company.
1946 - He was formally declared "de-Nazified" by the Allies in June but thereafter lived in poverty.
1950 - He died of a stroke on the 5th of January.
