1857 - Born on the 24th of July in Fredericia, Denmark.

1873 - Pontoppidan partly revolted against his environment by beginning studies in engineering in Copenhagen.

1879 - He broke off his studies and became for several years a teacher.

1881 - His first collection of stories, Stækkede Vinger.

         - He supported himself by writing, partly as a journalist with various Copenhagen papers.

1927 -His final novel, Mands Himmerig “Man's Heaven, describes neutral Denmark during World War I and attacks carefree materialism.

1933-1940 - His last important work was the four volumes of memoirs that he published and that appeared in a collected and abridged version, entitled Undervejs til mig selv.

1943 - Died on the 21st of August in Ordrup, near Copenhagen.
