1653 - Born on July 5th in Blandford St. Mary, Dorset, England. British merchant whose involvement in the East India trade brought him into conflict with the English East India Company; later, the company made him governor of Madras, India.

1674 - Pitt settled at Balasore and began a long struggle with the company.

1677-1680 - He paid further visits to Persia and he trafficked in very various commodities, including sugar and horses. His ventures proved most successful.

         - Pitt married Jane, daughter of James Innes of Reid Hall in Moray, who was descended, in the female line, from the Earls of Moray.

1681 - He returned to England.

1683 - He was arrested on his arrival at the suit of the company, and was bound over in recognisances to the amount of £40,000.

1695 - Pitt received offers of help from the company and returned to England, where he was temporarily engaged as an agent for the company in the recovery of certain ships from Bres

         - On 28th October, he was elected M.P. for Old Sarum.

1717 - At a by-election, on the 30th of July, he was elected to parliament for Thirsk.

1722 - He was returned for Old Sarum.

1726 - Died on April 28th in Swallowfield, Berkshire.
