1908 - He and 23 men set off from New York City aboard the Roosevelt under the command of Captain Robert Bartlett on the 6th of July. 1856 - Born in the Pittsburgh area town of Cresson, Pennsylvania on the 6th of May.

1881 - He was commissioned a Lieutenant in the United States Navy on the 26th of October.

1886 - Peary made several expeditions to the Arctic.

1891 - Exploring Greenland by dog sled.

1898-1905 - Peary made several attempts to reach the North Pole.

1911 - Peary was promoted to Rear Admiral and given the thanks of Congress by a special act on the 30th of March.

1920 - Died in Washington, D.C. on the 20th of  February and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
