1842 - Born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania on the 21st of January.

1873 - In November, Packer was with a party of 21 who left Provo, Utah, bound for the Colorado gold country in Breckenridge.

1874 - On the 21st of January, he met with Chief Ouray near Montrose, Colorado.

1874 - On the 16th of April, Packer arrived alone at Los Pinos Indian Agency near Gunnison.

1874 - Packer signed a confession on the 5th of August. He was jailed in Saguache, but escaped soon after, vanishing for several years.

1883 - On the 11th of March, Packer was discovered in Cheyenne, Wyoming living under the alias of "John Schwartze.

         - On the 16th of March, he signed another confession.

         - On the 6th of April, a trial began in Lake City, Colorado.

         - On the 13th of April, he was found guilty and sentenced to death.

1885 - Packer managed to temporarily avoid punishment again: in October, the sentence was reversed by the Colorado Supreme Court as being based on an ex post facto law.

1886 - On the 8th of June, Packer was sentenced to 40 years at a trial in Gunnison.

1899 - On the 19th of June, Packer's sentence was upheld by the Colorado Supreme Court.

1901 - He was paroled on the 8th of February and moved to Deer Creek, in Jefferson County, Colorado.

         - He is widely rumored to have become a vegetarian before his death, reputedly of "Senility - trouble & worry" at the age of 65.

1981 - He was buried in Littleton, Colorado and was formally pardoned of his crimes on the 5th of March.
