1949 - She earned her B.A. from New York University.
1950 - Went on to study English Literature at Ohio State University, where she completed an M.A.
1986 - She was selected as the first winner of the Rea Award for the Short Story.
2004 - Her most recent novel, Heir to the Glimmering World, called The Bear Boy in the United Kingdom, has received much praise in the literary press.
2005 - She was on the shortlist for the Man Booker International Prize.
2007 - She writes criticism about American Letters by Georgetown University.
