1818 - Born on the 18th of October in Cumberland, Maryland.
1849 - He chose William Rich Hutton as his assistant, and together the two mapped Los Angeles.
1850 - He was promoted to Captain, while serving in the Pacific Northwest.
1854 - He married Mary Mercer Thompson.
1859 - He attended the artillery school at Fort Monroe, Virginia.
1862 - He was promoted to the rank of Major General of volunteers and assigned command of the 2nd Division of the Army of the Tennessee at Corinth.
1864 - He was transferred back to the Eastern Theater.
- He commanded the XVlll Corps and was seriously wounded in the attack on Fort Harrison. 1865 - He was assigned to command the Army of the James during the Appomattox Campaign.
- He received the commissions of lieutenant colonel and brigadier in the Regular Army.
1866 - He was assigned to the Department of Ohio, until he was mustered out of the volunteers.
1872 - He was a member of the buffalo hunting excursion with the Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich of Russia.
1875 - He was reassigned as the commander of the Department of Texas.
1880 - He retired from the army with the rank of brevet major general.
1881 - He accepted an appointment with the Mexican Southern Railroad.
1883 - He died on the 22nd of July in Havana, Cuba.
