1857 - Born on the 2nd of January.
1871 - At 14, he dropped out of public school to work for the local paper, the (seemingly now defunct) Madison Gazette.
1873 - At 16, moved to New York City where he worked in a store and continued to draw.
1876 - His first cartoon was published in Wild Oats.
1877 - He worked as illustrator at Frank Leslie's Weekly.
1881 - He married Nellie Barnett.
1888 - 1907 - He also illustrated works for Edgar Wilson Nye, Mark Twain and Finley Peter Dunne, and published his own books including Puck's Opper Book, The Folks in Funnyville, and Happy Hooligan Home Again.
1899 - He accepted an offer by William Randolf Hearst for a position with the New York Journal.
1907 - He was a member of several New York clubs and he painted as a hobby.
1934 - Due to failing eyesight, he retired and he died at home in New Rochelle, New York.
1937 - He died on the 27th of August in New Rochelle, New York.
