1720 - He entered Parliament as a member for the borough of Guildford.

1728 - He was elected Speaker of the House of Commons, being the third member of his family to hold this office.

1930 - He was involved in the efforts to start an institution in London that would care for abandoned and illegitimate children.

1734 - He became Treasurer of the Navy in British.

1761 - He retired from the position of Speaker and from parliament.

1768 - He died on the 17th of February, at the age of 76, he was buried at St Nicholas Church, Thames Ditton.
