1949 - He continued to work for the Times and write books.
- He was elected to the Oregon State Senate.
1954 - He was elected as a Democrat to one of Oregon's United States Senate seats.
1956 - He was responsible for sponsoring the initial version of the Alaska Mental Health Enabling Act.
1959 - He initially introduced a bill for its creation.
1960 - He died on the 9th of March.
