1791 - John Nelson, born on the 1st of June in Frederick, Maryland, the son of politician Roger Nelson.
1811 - He graduated from the College of William and Mary.
1813 - He was admitted to the bar, starting practice in Frederick.
1821 - 1823 - He served only one term representing Maryland districts.
1825 - He received an A.M. degree from Princeton University.
1831 - 1832 - He was appointed Chargé d'affaires to the Two Sicilies.
1843 - 1845 - He was Attorney General of the United States under John Tyler.
1844 - He also served as United States Secretary of State ad interim for about a month after the sudden death of the previous Secretary of State Abel P. Upshur.
1860 - He retired from public life and died in Baltimore, Maryland, on the 8th of January.
