1961 - Was born in Sydney on the 21st of July.
1984-1986 - He was an official with the Commonwealth Bank Employees Union.
- He then worked as an adviser to Senator Graham Richardson who held the portfolios of environment and social security in the Hawke and Keating federal governments.
1991 - Was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for the seat of Hurstville, defeating a sitting Liberal member.
1999 - He won a tough pre-selection battle for the safe seat of Lakemba, which included part of the old seat of Hurstville. Iemma has held Lakemba since.
1999-2003 - He was Minister for Public Works and Services and Minister Assisting the Premier on Citizenship.
2001-2003 - Minister for Sport and Recreation.
2003-2005 - Minister for Health.
- On the 3rd of August, he immediately announced his candidacy to succeed him as leader of the NSW Labor Party and thus as Premier.
- He was formally appointed by Professor Marie Bashir, AC, the Governor of New South Wales, on the 3rd of August.
2007 - He maintained a comfortable lead in various opinion polls.
