1792 - He was born on January 8th in Medfield, Maine, and holds a special place in the history of church music and music education in the United States.

1827 - He moved to Boston and became president of the Handel and Haydn Society, and choir director of Bowdoin St. Church.

1833 - He established the Boston Academy of Music and was eventually responsible for introducing music into the public school curriculum of Boston.

1859 - He composed songs "Joy to the World", "Nearer, My God, to Thee".

1872 - Died on August 11th in Orange, New Jersey.
