1918 - He joined the United States Navy.
1927 - He attended at Montana School of Mines.]
1934 - He graduated at University of Montana with a degree of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts.
1942 - He was a Professor of Latin American and Far Eastern History at the University of Montana and a
member of the American Federation of Teachers.
1943 - He became a member of the Democratic Party in the U.S. House of Representatives.
1953 - He became a member at United States Senate.
1961 - He served as a Majority Leader in Senate.
1976 - He retired from the U.S. Senate.
1977 - He was appointed by President Jimmy Carter (39th President of the U.S.) as a Ambassador to Japan.
1989 - He received the "United States Military Academy Sylvanus Thayer Award".
1990 - He received the "Presidential Medal of Freedom" one of the two highest Civilian Award.
2001 - He died on the 5th of October at the age of 98.
