Ludington, Sybil
1761 - Sybil Ludington born on the 5th of April in Putnam County, New York. The eldest of 12, she was often responsible for looking after her younger siblings. The daughter of a New York militia colonel, is often called the “female Paul Revere.”
1777 - On the 26th of April the Ludingtons learned that the British, under Gov. William Tryon, were attacking Danbury, Connecticut, where revolutionaries stored their weapons. She, 16 at the time, rode 40 miles through the night on horseback to gather soldiers to protect the armaments. The 400 troops that assembled successfully thwarted the British.
1784 - Shel married a lawyer from Catskill named Edmund Ogden. They had one child, Henry, whose son founded Fort Riley, Kansas.
1839 - Died on the 26th of February, she was buried near her father in the Maple Avenue Cemetery in Patterson, New York.
1975 - She was honored with a stamp in the "Contributors to the Cause" United States Bicentennial series.
