1985 - She began her professional music career with a brief stint as the lead singer of 'Faith No More', until she was kicked out of the band.

1986 - She had more early success as an actress, appearing as the best friend of Nancy Spungen in Alex Cox's Sid Vicious biopic Sid and Nancy.

1987 - She moved back to Portland, then on to Los Angeles, California with fellow musician Kat Bjelland, beginning a period in which she would form bands with Bjelland only to be ousted by her from each.

1989 - She taught herself to play guitar and set out to form her own band.

1991 - She met Kurt Cobain at an L7/Butthole Surfers concert and they eventually fell in love..

1994 – She read the suicide note of Kurt Cobain.

1996 - She received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Drama.

1997 – She received an award in Chicago Film Critics Association Awards: Most Promising Actress.

2000 - She spoke in New York at the Digital Hollywood online entertainment conference, giving a speech criticizing the major American record labels.

2001 – She attempted to begin a "punk rock femme super group" called 'Bastard'.

2003 – She posed nude for British magazines Q.

2005 - She admitted using drugs in violation of her probation terms and on the 21st day of September. She was sentenced to 6 months in a lock down rehab.

2006 - She released a memoir collection book, 'Dirty Blonde' and her sophomore album.
