1960 - A graduate of the Bronx High School of Science, he received a B.S. in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
1963 - 1972 - Received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from Brandeis University.
2000 - His “Time, Clocks, and the Ordering of Events in a Distributed System”, which received the PODC Influential Paper Award.
2001 - He joined Microsoft Research at Mountain View, California.
2003 - Received four honorary doctorates from European universities: University of Rennes and Christian Albrechts University of Kiel.
2004 - Received four honorary doctorates from EPFL.
- He received the IEEE Piore Award.
2005 - His work, the paper “Reaching Agreement in the Presence of Faults”, received the Dijkstra Prize.
2006 - Received four honorary doctorates from University of Lugano.
