1646 - Born in Germany on the 8th of August.
- Kneller studied in Leiden, but became a pupil of Ferdinand Bol and Rembrandt in Amsterdam.
1670 - He worked in Rome and Venice, painting historical subjects and portraits, and later moved to Hamburg.
1674 - He came to England, at the invitation of the Duke of Monmouth, accompanied by his brother, John Zacharias Kneller, who was an ornamental painter.
1680 - When Sir Peter Lely died, Kneller was appointed Principal Painter to the Crown by Charles II.
1687 - His major works include The Chinese Convert, a series of ten reigning European monarchs.
1711-1716 - He was also head of the Kneller Academy of Painting and Drawing in Great Queen Street, London.
1723 - Kneller died of fever on the 19th of October and his remains were interred in Twickenham Church.
