1925 - Kim Dae Jung, born on the 3rd of December in Haui-do, Jeollanam-do, an island off the South Korean Coast. He is a former South Korean president.

1954 - Entered politics, opposing the policies of Syngman Rhee.

1957 - A Roman Catholic, he has been called the "Nelson Mandela" of Asia.

1961 - Elected as a representative for the National Assembly.

1973 - He was kidnapped from a hotel in Tokyo by KCIA agents in response to his criticism of President Park's yushin program.

1998 - 2003 - He was the President (succeeding Kim Young-sam.

2000 - He participated in the first North-South presidential summit with North Korea's leader Kim Jong-il, which later led to his winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
