1902 - Born on the 26th of October in Binghamton, New York, United States.

1929 - In a fight held in Yankee Stadium, he knocked out the former light-heavyweight champion, Tommy Loughran to win the United States heavyweight title.

1930 - On the 12th of June, championship fight, he was disqualified in the fourth round after delivering a punch that landed below Schmeling's belt.

1931 - In October, he defeated the highly regarded Italian heavyweight, Primo Carnera, and was then given another chance to fight for the title.

1932 - On the 21st of June at the Madison Square Garden Bowl in Long Island City, New York, he defeated Max Schmeling in their rematch to win the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship in a very controversial split decision.

1933 - He lost his championship on the 29th of June in his second fight with Primo Carnera.

1994 - Died on the 17th of August in Beverly, Massachusetts

      - He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
