1920 - Born on May 18th in Wadowice, Poland.

 

1954-1958 - He was a professor of moral philosophy at Catholic University in Lublin.

 

         - A Catholic bishop of Ombi.

1960 - He wrote the play "The Goldsmith Shop" under pseudonym Andrej Jawien.

1963 - Became the Catholic archbishop of Krakow.

1967 - He became a cardinal.

1979 - He wrote his poetry collection "Easter Vigil and Other Poems" under pseudonym Andrej Jawien.

1981 - He survived the assassination attempt by Mehmet Ali Agca in St. Peter's Square.

1986 - He was the 1st pope to visit synagogue.

1993 - Opened diplomatic relations between Vatican and Israel.

         - Wrote the papal encyclicals "Veritatis Splendor" ( "The Splendor of Truth").

1994 - He wrote the collection of reflections "Crossing the Threshold of Hope".

1995 - Wrote the "Evangelium Vitae" ("The Gospel of Life").

2001 - He was the 1st pope to visit mosque.

2002 - The 1st pope to address Italian Parliament.

 

2005 - He died on April 2nd in Vatican.
