1971 - He won first prize in the International Conductors Competition at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.
1980 - Järvi emigrated to the United States of America.
1982 - He became the principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and during his tenure, the recording profile and reputation of the orchestra greatly increased.
1987 - Became an American citizen.
1999 - Järvi was the Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and is now its Music Director Emeritus.
2000 - He has helped in fund-raising for the Estonian Academy of Music.
2005 - He is Chief Conductor of Het Residentie Orkest of The Hague.
