1936 - Sharpe James, born on the 20th of  February in Jacksonville, Florida. He is an American Democratic Party politician , who became the second African American Mayor of Newark, New Jersey.

2002 - He was the 35th mayor of Newark and was elected to a fifth four-year term.

1961 - He received the Department of Physiology Award from that school, and later completed postgraduate studies at Washington State University, Columbia University, and Rutgers University.

       - He also served with the United States Army in Europe.

1970 - Was first elected to public office in as South Ward Councilman.

1986 - He was first elected Mayor of Newark on the 13th of May, and was sworn into office on 1st of July.

1988 - He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Montclair State University.

1991 - Awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Drew University.

1999 - In June, while serving as Mayor, he was appointed to the New Jersey Senate to fill out the unexpired term of the late Senator Wynona Lipman, and won election to that seat the following November.

2001 - He was re-elected for a full term in November, and continued to hold both offices.

2007 - On the 9th of April, he said that he would not seek re-election to his State Senate seat.
