1963 - At the age of 15 he ran away from home and joined the Navy, but quickly discovered that military life conflicted with his musical ambitions.
1978 - He released his debut album, Come and Get It.
1981 - He recorded song "Super Freak".
1986 - Release of The Flag, his 11th record for Motown, James brought an end to his long-standing relationship with the label and threw his lot in with Reprise.
1997 - Married to Tanya Anne Hijazi.
2004 - He died due to heart failure on August 6th in Los Angeles, California.
