1923 - Born on January 1st in Detroit, Michigan. American jazz musician who introduced a range of expression and melody to a previously unexpressive percussion instrument, the vibraphone, in order to create passionate solos that made him one of the giants of modern jazz.
1945 - Dizzy Gillespie arranged for him to come to New York, whereupon he joined Dizzy’s sextet, then a year later, his big band.
1949 - He replaced Terry Gibbs in the Woody Herman band.
1950 - Returned to the Gillespie organization.
1957 - He and Lewis were faculty members of the School of Jazz in Lenox, Massachusetts.
- He dominated his instrument for much of his career, was inducted into the Percussion Hall of Fame, and received numerous other awards, including induction in the Down Beat Hall of Fame.
1999 - Died on October 9th in New York, New York.
