Johns Hopkins

1795 - Born on an Anne Arundel County tobacco plantation on the 19th of May.

1807 - His parents, Maryland-born Samuel Hopkins and Virginia-born Hannah Janney, freed their slaves.

1832 - Hopkins commissioned a young Baltimore painter named Alfred Jacob Miller.

1957-1873 - He invested heavily in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, where he made most of his fortune. He twice put up his own money to bail out the railroad.

1873 - He died on Christmas Eve, he left his fortune of $8 million to found a university and hospital. Hopkins' will stated that the hospital was to "compare favorably with any institution of like character in this country or in Europe" and, remarkably for its time, the hospital was to treat "the poor of this city and state, of all races.

1875 - Bequest was used to found the Johns Hopkins Colored Children Orphan Asylum.

1876 - Johns Hopkins University.

1889 - Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.

1893 - Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1893.
