1924 AD - Zbigniew Herbert, born on the 29th of October in Lvov, in Ukraine (formerly Lvov, Poland). He was an influential Polish poet, essayist and moralist. A member of the Polish resistance movement during World War II, he is one of the best known and most translated post-war Polish writers.
1956 AD - His first collection was Struna swiatla Chords of Light.
1961-1983 AD - Later volumes include Studium przedmiotu, (Study of the Object), Pan Cogito (Mr Cogito), and Raport z oblezonego miasta (Report from a Besieged City).
1992 AD - He returned to Warsaw, by this time seriously ill.
1994 AD - He praised the Cold War anti-communist spy Colonel Ryszard Kukliński in an open letter then president Lech Wałęsa, and later also expressed support for the Chechen Dzjochar Dudajev.
1998 AD - He died on the 28th of July in Warsaw, Poland.
