1828 - Studied law, admitted to the bar and practiced in Columbia.

1834 - Established a newspaper to support nullification; planter; elected as a Nullifier to the Twenty-fourth Congress.

1835 - 1836 - Served as Nullifer.

1842 - 1844 - Governor of South Carolina.

1857 - Elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Andrew P. Butler.

1864 - Died at “Redcliffe,” Beach Island, South Carolina on the 13th of November.
