US political scientist.

1951 - Born 28th of July in Brooklyn.

1973 - Obtained a B.A. from Oberlin College.

Finished Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy from Oxford University.

1981-1985 - Served in the Department of State.

1979-1980 - Worked in the Department of Defense and was a legislative aide in the U.S.

1989-1993 - Special Assistant to United States President George H. W. Bush and National Security Council.

         - Senior Director for Near East and South Asian Affairs.

1991 - Received the Presidential Citizens Medal for helping to develop and explain U.S. policy.

1996-2001 - Director of foreign policy studies at Brookings Institution.

1997 - Wrote "The Reluctant Sheriff: The United States After the Cold War".

2001-2003 - Director of policy planning at State Department.

2003 - President of Council on Foreign Relations.
