1928 - Born on June 8th in Lima, Peru. Roman Catholic theologian and Dominican priest who is considered the father of liberation theology, which emphasizes a Christian duty to aid the poor and oppressed through involvement in civic and political affairs.

1950 - Gutiérrez had previously earned a degree in medicine from the National University of Peru in Lima.

1959 - Ordained as a priest.

1971-1984 - He wrote "A Theology of Liberation" and "The Power of the Poor in History".

1993-1995 - Was named a member of the Honor Legion by the French government, and was named to the Peruvian Academy of Language.
